We travelled to Derbyshire with a squad of 13, including 11 that were aged 18 or under. We faced experienced higher league opposition in what was our history making first ever appearance in the #AdobeWomensFACup.
We started slowly (again) and found ourselves 1 down in less than a minute. We regrouped, showed resilience and quickly turned the game around. 2 quickfire goals from the ever dangerous Carmel Burke, the first following in a Grace Smith free kick that the home keeper parried, then the second a cool finish after latching on to a pass from Grace Smith. We continued to create chances, with Carmel having a goal ruled out for offside. This forced the home side into a tactical change, and it wasnt long before they equalised, a speculative long range effort catching out our keeper. A stop start first half saw the referee indicate six minutes of added time, and a defensive mix up let the dangerous Melbourne number 9 in on goal, rounding the keeper and playing into the empty net despite Tegan trying to get back to cover. At half time we talked about the belief that we could get back into the game, and how we deserved to be competing at this level. The hosts extended their lead on 57 minutes but an absolute worldie of a free kick from POTM Grace Smith pulled one back within 2 minutes. The last half hour lacked the quality of the first 60 minutes as both teams tired, the home side looking more likely to score, with Rubie pulling off a couple of sharp saves. The full time whistle went and despite the disappointment we were really proud of our performance. We said we would give our best, and we did.
